Ariel Riani (born 1926) is an Uruguayan political, law enforcement and business figure.

Background and early career

He served as police chief of Artigas during the Presidency of Jorge Pacheco Areco. This period attracted international comment for the stringent law enforcement methods adopted by Mr. Pacheco's government.

Riani also served as 'Intendente' (political head) of Artigas Department.

He is a longstanding member of Uruguay's Colorado Party.

Mining industry interests

Riani has been for many years identified with Uruguayan mining interests.

Political alignment with Pedro Bordaberry Herrán

In 2008 Riani was campaigning on behalf of the 'Vamos Uruguay' grouping led by Pedro Bordaberry Herrán, within the Colorado Party.[1]
