Astronotus crassipinnis is a fish in the cichlid family not well as known as Astronotus ocellatus. A. crassipinnis is rarely found in the aquarium hobby since it is seldom exported from South America and many places it lives are unexplored. They live in the Amazon river basins of South America in Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil.[1]
Etymology
Astronotus comes from the Greek words Astra which means ray and Noton is the greek word for back. Crassipinnis comes from the Greek words Crassus came from the word fat fat and Pinna means fish.[2]
In the aquarium
Though very rare "Fat Oscars" as they are sometimes referred to has appeared in the aquarium hobby most of the time mistaken for Astronotus ocellatus. The biggest Astronotus crassipinnis measured was 9.4 in but may grow to the size of Astronotus ocellatus.[3]
