  • The Balm of Gilead was first mentioned in connection with Gilead, familiar from the Bible and from classical Greek and Latin texts, usually translated as "balm" or "balsam".
  • Balsam of Mecca, resin and other products of the Arabian tree species Commiphora gileadensis (syn. Commiphora opobalsamum).
  • Canada balsam, resin produced by the fir species Abies balsamea
  • A common name for several plants that yield aromatic resin:
    • Cedronella canariensis, a shrubby herbaceous plant in the Lamiaceae family, native to the Canary Islands and introduced elsewhere
    • Commiphora gileadensis, a shrub native to the Middle East, source of Balm of Gilead resin
    • Populus x jackii, a North American hybrid poplar tree, also called Populus x candicans or Populus x gileadensis.
