The Big Mound City is a historic site near Canal Point, Florida. It is located 10 miles east of Canal Point, off U.S. Route 98. On May 24, 1973, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is located inside the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area.

History

The Big Mound City site is the largest prehistoric Native American earthwork in southeastern Florida.[2] Dating from the late Mississippian Period (circa 1450-1500 AD), it is a combination of at least 23 mound structures and an embankment complex, including radiating causeways and crescent-shaped man-made ponds.[3][4] Of the mounds, some have been identified as being burial mounds.[3]
