Blackwater (Irish: An Abhainn Dubh, meaning 'the black river') is a rural village in County Wexford, Ireland.[1] It lies mostly within the townland of Ballynaglogh (Irish: Baile na gCloch, meaning 'the town of the stones') on the R742 regional road 16 km (9.9 mi) north of Wexford.

Transport

Michael Gray operates a route linking the village with Wexford Mondays to Fridays inclusive [2] Bus Éireann route 379 serves the village on Mondays and Saturdays only linking it to Wexford, Gorey and intermediate locations such as Courtown Harbour.[3]

Amenities

The village has four pubs, Corrigan's, the Blackwater Lodge (which is also a hotel), Whelan's and Etchingham's (which has undergone several name changes in recent years). It also has a video Arcade called the Glider, a number of supermarkets, a large second-hand furniture store and a clothes alterations shop.

Lately the village has increased its population, and has seen the building of hundreds of houses in the village itself and in outlying areas.

Blackwater is very close to Ballyconnigar beach, a site with one of the highest levels of erosion due to tidal forces. The stretch of beach from Ballyconnigar to Ballynaclash is popular for bathing, walking and fishing. Due to high volumes of beach users in the summer months, off season and night fishing is probably best advised. The ground south of where the Blackwater River enters the sea is very broken and does not seem to hold many fish. Species encountered outside this area include bullhuss, smoothound, tope, bass, ray, codling, eels and flounder.

Ballyconnigar beach is close to Curracloe strand and Ballinesker beach, where the opening scene of the film "Saving Private Ryan" was filmed.

Blackwater also has a mobile-home holiday park called 'Abhainn Dubh Mobile home and Leisure Park' which has been opened since 1993 and lies less than a 5 minute walk from Blackwater village.[4]

Sports

The local GAA team is St. Brigid's Blackwater, established in 1885. The hurling team are in the Intermediate Championship. The Gaelic football team won the 2009 Junior Championship.

Blackwater has a Par 3 golf course which is located about 5 minutes drive outside of the village between Blackwater and Kilmuckridge. The golf course itself was opened in July 1993 although Blackwater Golf Society had its first outing in 1991. They play in many of the major courses in county Wexford and its surrounding counties, golf clubs such as : Wexford golf club, Enniscorthy Golf Club, Rosslare, St. Helens Bay, Mount Wolseley, Courtown, Coolattin, Bunclody, Killerig, Waterford and more.

Blackwater now has its own FootGolf course, located at Blackwater Golf Course, FootGolf a new craze that is sweeping the world. It incorporates both the elegance of golf and the world's passion for football.

Blackwater served as a setting of Mary Kay Tuberty's 2015 novel Keeper of Coin.[5]
