Bytemark is a UK-based server hosting and datacentre provider,[1] headquartered in York, United Kingdom.[2] Founded in 2002 as Bytemark Computer Consulting Ltd,[3]

Bytemark was the first provider[citation needed] of virtual machines and cloud hosting through User-mode Linux in 2003.[4]

In 2012, Bytemark launched BigV[5] their public cloud platform designed completely in-house using open source software. In 2013, Bytemark moved into their own £1.2 million datacentre and headquarters in York, "YO26".[6] In 2017, their BigV platform was renamed Bytemark Cloud.

Environmental and ethical policies

The YO26 datacentre uses fresh-air cooling, not common in the UK[7] and was shortlisted for Innovation in Medium Data Center at the DatacenterDynamics Awards EMEA 2013.[8]

Each of Bytemark's servers is built using efficient power supplies as certified by the 80plus scheme, which requires power supplies to be at least 80% efficient at up to 100% rated load.

To reduce the bias found in traditional recruitment processes, Bytemark developed their own anonymous recruitment process in 2015.[9]

Awards

In 2014, Bytemark was named one of the Top 50 Fastest Grown Tech Companies in the North[10] at the Northern Tech Awards[11] with revenue growth of 44%. Financially, Bytemark turned over £2.5 million in 2013.[12] In 2014, this grew to £3 million.[13]

In 2015 Bytemark was awarded the Fair Tax Mark.[14]

Support of open-source projects

Bytemark has a history of contributing to and support free software. Bytemark offer an ongoing discount to Free software publishers of at least 5%.[15]

Bytemark support LibreOffice[16] through provision of a build server.[17] In 2009, Bytemark became a supporter of XBMC[18] with the same. In 2012, Bytemark started supporting Cyanogenmod with build servers.[19]

In 2013, Bytemark contributed hosting services worth £150,000 to the Debian project[20] having used Debian since the company was founded. Bytemark also supports OpenStreetMap with DNS services and servers to support version control, mailing lists and help pages.[21]

Bytemark also support projects for social good including sponsoring servers for mySociety including FixMyStreet, TheyWorkForYou and WhatDoTheyKnow.[22]
