CAMUS, A FAMILY PASSION AND A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE OF COGNAC, SINCE 1863

The CAMUS Company, the world’s no. 5 cognac brand, is the largest cognac producer that is still entirely family owned.
The French family, whose passion is continually dedicated to the making of distinctive, authentic and high quality cognacs since its foundation in 1863, is going to celebrate his 150 years anniversary in 2013.

CAMUS is a story of a family of winegrowers passing down its passion for Cognac-making from father to son, generation after generation, gradually cultivating its traditions rather than just perpetuating them. Breathing life into Tradition rather than simply keeping memories alive.

It is also the story of a very high level of craftsmanship, carefully nurtured over 150 years, each generation building and surpassing the skills of the previous one.

Camus is sold in almost every country in the world, in almost every international airport, and on-board a large number of airlines.
Today the CAMUS company is run by Cyril Camus, 41 years old, 5th generation. Being president of the company, Cyril CAMUS crosses the world as the most passionate ambassador of quality Cognacs.
Five generations
Since 1863, five generations of the CAMUS family have cultivated a single-minded passion for great cognac, bringing to life the infinite riches and soul of the land that is their home. Each generation has contributed to the philosophy that produces innovative, superb cognacs, ensuring that every CAMUS cognac is marked by the personality of the family and the floral character of the Borderies, the smallest and rarest cognac growing area where CAMUS’ vineyards are located.
JEAN-BAPTISTE CAMUS
INDEPENDENCE & QUALITY
Jean-Baptiste CAMUS (1835-1901) introduced the key principles of independence and quality. He started life as an independent wine grower, distilling and selling his cognac to established cognac houses. In 1863 he decided to organise a consortium of producers to guarantee a consistently high level of quality in terms of production and supplies of mature stocks of cognac, and founded ‘La Grande Marque’ as the brand under which to sell them.
England was the first export market for La Grande Marque, and it rapidly became clear that these cognacs
were among the finest quality available on the market. With proof that quality was the surest route to success, and seeking to establish the principle that the CAMUS family must have total control of the process from the grape to the glass, Jean-Baptiste finally bought up his partners’ shares and created ‘CAMUS La Grande Marque’.
EDMOND AND GASTON CAMUS
EXPORT DEVELOPMENT
The next generation built on the quality principle to develop the export business for CAMUS. Jean-Baptiste’s elder son, Edmond (1859-1933), entered the company in 1894 as Master Blender, helping his father with all aspects of production. Under his direction, not only did CAMUS gain further recognition for the quality of its cognacs, but also became one of the first cognac houses to use labelled bottles to sell cognac instead of barrels, reinforcing the quality and the brand name. He also developed sales on the French market, establishing
CAMUS in numerous Parisian restaurants.
Edmond’s younger brother, Gaston (1865-1945), joined the company in 1896 and devoted himself to export sales. He developed a business in Russia, where CAMUS became the official cognac of the Court of the last Tsar. It was Gaston who established CAMUS’ unique position as the only major cognac house to sell solely premium cognacs.
DEVELOPMENT OF DUTY FREE MARKETS
The third generation, with great insight, entered a new market which was to become a huge business for the company. Michel CAMUS (1911-1985) was only 21 when he joined the firm in 1932, but he was an excellent salesman. He continued to build CAMUS’ relationship with Russia, winning an exclusive spirits export and import contract between France and Russia in 1959.
In the early 1960s, recognising the enormous potential of the embryonic duty free market, he started doing business with American group Duty Free Shoppers. He introduced to duty free a great variety of gift presentations targeted at the travelling businessman and collector, including items such as Limoges porcelain and Baccarat crystal decanters, and first promoted the superior Napoléon quality in a signature frosted bottle. This example was soon copied by other cognac houses, but to this day CAMUS remains a leader in duty free and travel retail throughout the world.
JEAN-PAUL CAMUS
INDEPENDENCE OF SUPPLIES
The fourth generation, again with much foresight, set about guaranteeing the future independence of the company. Born in 1945 and joining the company to help his father as Master Blender in 1977, Jean-Paul CAMUS recognised the profound structural changes that were beginning to shape the cognac market. His philosophy was based on ensuring and strengthening CAMUS’ Eaux-de-vie supplies, ageing facilities and production capacity, in order to remain entirely independent. He bought new vineyards, distilleries and storage capacity, focussing mainly around the traditional family base in the Borderies growing area.
He also vigorously pursued his father’s commercial policy in duty free, developing a major stronghold in the Asia-Pacific region with airports and airlines, as well as leading positions in Japan and Korea.
PRODUCT INNOVATION & EXPORT DEVELOPMENT
The fifth generation is devoted to adapting the company’s offering to the needs of tomorrow’s consumer, through product innovation and export development. Cyril CAMUS, born in 1971, completed a business degree in the US before joining CAMUS as the Company’s Trade Relations Director in Beijing, China in 1994, where he sowed the seeds of long-term development in this potentially huge market.
He returned to Cognac in 1998 as Marketing Director, overseeing the creation of numerous new products for duty free. He also developed the Company’s signature Borderies XO, a pure Borderies blend from the family’s own vineyards, and broke new ground with a cognac from the hitherto largely overlooked Ile de Ré.
Becoming President in 2004, Cyril’s approach is driven by the evolution of consumer expectations and their effect on the cognac business. He focusses on adapting the company and its range of products to this new environment, and the first evidence is the boldly different CAMUS ELEGANCE range, emphasising the distinctive CAMUS taste and packaging.
Although resolutely forward-thinking, Cyril CAMUS today remains passionately faithful to the values inherited from previous generations of his family: tradition, quality, independence and innovation. As his father, Jean-Paul, once famously said: “Making a great cognac is easy. All you need is a great-grandfather, a grandfather and a father who have done it before you.”
CAMUS is proud to be different, combining the magic of the spirit, the beauty of the bottle and the essence of time in magnificent cognac creations.
As an introduction to the world of Borderies, Camus offers its single-growth Extra Old (XO), drawn from the private family reserves of Borderies. The eaux-de-vie which make up this 100% Borderies blend have, naturally, undergone careful ageing in oak barrels for the legal minimum of six and a half years, on their way to becoming a true and venerable XO. Then they have been captured in a richly frosted carafe, inspired by the perfume industry and symbolising the velvety rich fragrance of this magnificent cognac.
On the nose, discover a delightful concentration of violets and hazelnuts, while the palate, persistent and lightly-oaked, reveals delicious “pâtisserie”, spicy vanilla and “rancio” notes.
