Carlos E. Santiago
Carlos Enrique Santiago is a Puerto Rican American labor economist and the 7th chancellor of University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He was named Chief Executive Officer of the Hispanic College Fund in 2010 after his resignation from UW-Milwaukee.[1]
Background
Santiago received B.A. from the University of Miami, an M.A. from the University of Puerto Rico, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Cornell University; all are in economics. He was also Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at Department of Economics and Economic Growth Center, Yale University.[2]
He is a labor economist with regional expertise in the Caribbean and Central America, and special emphasis on Puerto Rico. He had served as Chair of the Department of Latin American & Caribbean Studies, University at Albany. He is also a founding Co-editor of the Latino Research Review and is a member of the U.S. Congressional Hispanic Caucus International Relations Advisory Group.[3]
Academic administration
He formerly served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University at Albany, State University of New York. Before joining University at Albany, State University of New York, he had taught at Wayne State University.
From 2004-2010, he was the seventh chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and held a professorship within its Department of Economics. During his tenure at UW-Milwaukee, he helped expand the school's research arm and capital capacities by rasing 125 million dollars from the private sector and advocated a 240 million dollar state-funded "UW-Milwaukee Initiative" campaign.,[4] before resigning to take the post at the Hispanic College Fund.
Santiago is now the Senior Deputy Commissioner for Academic Affairs at the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.[5]
