Located 25 km north from Riga at the mouth of the longest river in Latvia named Gauja. First mentioned in Livonian chronicles in 1211 as a summoning place of Livonian troops. Further existed as a fishermen village, where in 17th century the first breeding fishery and canned fish factory in the Empire of Russia were built.
