Castlight Health is a San Francisco based healthcare information company.[1] The company was founded in 2008 and offers enterprise healthcare technology allowing employees to compare healthcare providers across a variety of metrics to optimize pricing and quality.[2][3] The Castlight platform is licensed through a business-to-business-based subscription model. Only employees of companies that have purchased subscriptions have access to the Castlight platform, but Anthem Blue Cross will provide its commercial members with access to Castlight's core transparency tool.[4] In 2012 the company secured $100 million in investment funds.[2] In 2014 the company had its initial public offering,[5] valued at $2 billion, which attracted criticism for being part of a potential economic bubble.[6]

Contributions to Research

Castlight Health has developed a number of research papers in conjunction with outside parties in regards to health and healthcare issues.

Association between availability of health service prices and payments for these services[7]

The study shows that patients who use a transparency application to research healthcare prices pay less for those services, 13% less for advanced imaging and 14% less for laboratory tests.

Hand-Hygiene Safe Practices[8]

The report examines hand hygiene policies and accountability requirements in hospitals.

Forrester Consulting Survey: Managing the Healthcare Crisis[9]

The report studies healthcare utilization at large businesses and highlights causes for cost overruns.

Hospitals Fail to Meet National Nursing Workforce Standard[10]

The percentage of hospitals that meet all 21 of Leapfrog nursing workforce safe practices grew from 52 percent in 2013 to 60 percent in 2014. Despite this increase, two in five reporting hospitals did not fully meet Leapfrog standards.

Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) Systems and Medication Errors [11]

The report examines the use of CPOE systems for prescribers to enter medication orders into a computer system and transmit them electronically to a pharmacy. Studies suggest CPOE systems can substantially reduce medication errors, the most common mistakes made in hospitals.
