Category talk:Thelema

Is Thelema a category of Magick, or is Magick a category of Thelema? Right now the two categories loop back on themselves. This isn't a huge problem, but I don't think it upholds Wikipedia standards, either. --Geoff Capp 11:09, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, philosophically; but I was speaking in much more practical terms. In geek-speak, my question is: Should Category:Thelema subclass Category:Magick or vice versa? It's a difficult decision, but I would have to say that magic would be a subclass of Thelema because without the religon itself there is no Thelemic magic, so the existence of thelemic magic is dependant upon the existence of the thelemic religon. You wouldn't have Hinduism as a subclass of Yoga, in the same way Thelema should not be a subclass of Thelemic magic. SynthesiseD

Simple answer: 'Magick' is an eccentric synonym for 'ceremonial magic'; Thelema is a religion which promotes the later. Not all ceremonial magic is Thelema, Thus, Category:Ceremonial magic is an element of Category:Thelema. And Category:Magick redirects to Category:Ceremonial magic. But Category:Thelema should also be a subcat of Category:Ceremonial magic. It's a case of T includes CM, and T is also a type of CM. I don't think this should be considered a problem.
