A right-handed batsman, Alexander made his first-class debut for Kent against the Gentlemen of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1867. During that same season he was the Eton captain. From Eton, Alexander proceeded to King's College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1871.[2] Alexander appeared three further times for Kent, playing his final first-class match for the county in 1869 against Sussex. The following year, while undertaking studies at Cambridge University, he made his first-class debut for the University Cricket Club against Surrey at The Oval. He played one further first-class match for the University against the Marylebone Cricket Club.[3] In his six first-class matches, Alexander scored just 88 runs at a batting average of 9.77, with a high score of 41.
