Charles "Chuck" Theodore Hurley III is an American academic administrator.[2] He currently serves as the Assistant Vice President & University Registrar at University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.[3]

Biography[edit]

Born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, Hurley graduated undergraduate from the University of Notre Dame in 1993 and earned a master's degree cum laude from the Mendoza College of Business in 2001.[4] He also earned a master's in Theology from the Graduate School in 2007. Prior to attending Notre Dame, he earned his Associate of Arts from Holy Cross College in 1991 after graduating from St. Joseph High School (South Bend, Indiana) in 1989.[5]

Hurley served as Interim University Registrar in 2011-2012 and was promote to University Registrar in 2013.[6] He has also served as the Director of the Summer Session since May 1, 2009.[7] Before appointment as University Registrar, Hurley was Associate Registrar responsible for operational activities from 2003 until 2011. He has served in the Office of the Registrar since 1996.

He was President of the Indiana Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (IACRAO) from 2008-2009 and served on its executive committee from 2006-2010.[8]

In 2015, he won the Creative & Innovative NAASS Award from North American Association of Summer Sessions.[9][10] In 2019, he was part of the team that won the “University of Notre Dame Team Irish Award.”[11]

Hurley has been cited and interviewed in a multitude of national publications on topics as a leader in the academic administration of student records and data. In 1999, he gave his first interview on then emerging degree audit software at the University of Notre Dame that resulted in a cover story for the Chronicle of Higher Education.[12] Hurley spoke with the Chicago Tribune, Chronicle of Higher Education, and ABC in 2011, when one of his first steps as University Registrar was to cease the use of sheepskin for diplomas.[13][14][15] Due to his leadership, Hurley has been cited by peers and wrote pieces for Inside Higher Ed[16][17] and College & University Journal.[18]

Prior to his career in academic administration, he was software developer at the Associates Bancorp, a subsidiary of Citibank.

Personal life and family[edit]

Hurley is the son of former South Bend Chief of Police Chuck Hurley, Jr.[19] and Joan Hurley (née Horvath; born 1948). Hurley and his wife, Elizabeth Hurley (judge), have four children.

On his mother's side, Hurley is a member of the Horvath family. The Horvath family has been one of the more prominent athletic families in northern Indiana over the last century. His cousin Zander Horvath has been on NFL rosters as a fullback for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023, and New Orleans Saints in 2024, in addition to starting at running back for Purdue University and Marian High School (Indiana).[20] His cousin Ryan Horvath was a NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major All-America punter for Drake University, attended preseason NFL camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006, and was signed by the New York Sentinels of the United Football League (2009–2012) in 2009. Uncles Bob, Kevin, and Brian Horvath were Indiana All-State football players at Washington High School (South Bend, Indiana) during the 1970s & 1980s. Kevin Horvath was also the quarterback of Washington high school's 1973 3A state championship team.[21] Hurley and his brothers Chad and Christian played football and wrestled at St. Joseph High School (South Bend, Indiana), winning sectional and regional championships. In 1995, Christian Hurley was an All-State fullback on the Indiana 3A state championship football team,[22] as well as being a two-time state qualifier at the Indiana state wrestling championship.[23] Sister Angela Hurley was a two-time swimming state finalist in the 50 & 100 freestyle for St. Joseph High School (South Bend, Indiana) in 1997 & 1998.[24] His son Rockne Hurley was academic All-State and All-Conference defensive end in football, a member of the 2017 and 2015 state runner-up football team, and a two-time All-State wrester at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, placing fifth in 2019.[25] [26]
