Christopher C. Pappas (born June 4, 1980) is an American small businessman and politician currently serving on the New Hampshire Executive Council, to which he was first elected in 2012.[1] A member of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, he represents District 4 on the council, which includes the city of Manchester along with parts of Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, and Strafford Counties.[2]

Pappas is co-owner of the Puritan Backroom restaurant in Manchester,[3] well-known within the state as a frequent stop for presidential candidates during the New Hampshire primary.[4]

Early life and education

Pappas was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on June 4, 1980. He is the son of Dawn and Arthur Pappas.[5]

After graduating from Manchester Central High School, Pappas attended Harvard College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Government in 2002. In 1996 as a high school student, Pappas met then-State Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who was running for Governor at the time. Struck by Shaheen's message about the importance of education and the opportunity it creates for people, Pappas signed-on as a volunteer for Shaheen's campaign, marking his first foray into politics.[5]

Political career

First elected to public office in 2002, Pappas served two terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives (elected in 2002 and 2004),[5] followed by two terms as treasurer of Hillsborough County.[6]

Pappas has been floated as a potential candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives,[7] for U.S. Senator, or for Governor of New Hampshire.[8][9] He is currently running for reelection to the Executive Council. In past and current elections, he has been endorsed by individuals and groups including former Governor John Lynch, the Manchester Police Patrolmen's Association, the Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire, and the National Federation of Independent Business.[10]

Personal life

Pappas is single and has never been married, although he hopes marriage and children are in his future.[8] Pappas is openly gay.[6]
