Christopher Paul O'Neill, KNO (born 27 June 1974) is a British-born American businessman living and working in New York, and the husband of Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland.

Early life

O'Neill was born in London to Paul Cesario O'Neill (1926–2004),[1] an American investment banker who came to London in the 1960s to set up the European head office of investment bank Oppenheimer & Co,[2][3] and Eva Maria Walter (born 1940), who was born in Austria. Their marriage was his second and her third.[4]

He has five half-sisters (maternal side: Tatjana d'Abo, Countess Natascha Abensberg-Traun; paternal side: Stephanie, Annalisa and Karen). He grew up in London and St. Gallen, often spending time in Austria and Germany, and is a dual UK/US citizen.[2]

Education and career

He was educated at Institut auf dem Rosenberg in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and holds a B.A. degree in International Relations from Boston University. He also holds an MBA degree from Columbia Business School in New York. He is a partner and Head of Research at Noster Capital and former employee at NM Rothschild and Sons and Steinberg Asset Management.[2]

Relationship and marriage

The first time Princess Madeleine and O'Neill appeared publicly together was in January 2011.[3] Their engagement was announced on 25 October 2012 with an official interview,[5] and in late April 2013 it was announced that their wedding would take place on 8 June 2013 at the Royal Chapel within the Royal Palace in Stockholm, followed by dinner at the royal family's residence, Drottningholm Palace.[6]

Unlike Prince Daniel, O'Neill is without royal duties or titles, because a member of the Swedish royal family must have Swedish citizenship, which O'Neill has declined. As a private citizen, he will continue his career in finance.[7] The couple intends to continue living in New York.[5]

Honours

On 6 June 2013, O'Neill was made a Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star (KNO) by his father-in-law, the King of Sweden.[8] Since 1975 the order has been awarded to foreigners and members of the royal family only.
