The Da Poetry Lounge (DPL) is the largest weekly open mic performance space for poetry in the US.[1][2] The DPL is located in Los Angeles at the Greenway Court Theatre and performances are held every Tuesday night from 9pm-12am.[3]
Founders
The DPL was founded in 1998 by poets; Dante Basco, Ron "Shihan" VanClief, Devan "Poetri" Smith and "Brutha" Gimmel Hooper.[4][5][6]
Dante Basco
The organization was originally named, "Dante's Poetry Lounge" but has since been renamed "Da Poetry Lounge."[7] Basco is a Filipino American actor, poet and performer who notably played Rufio in Hook.
Event
Performers have to show up to the Tuesday night readings early to sign up to perform. The artists then perform on a "first-come-first-served" basis.[1]
Slam Poetry Team
The DPL has a slam poetry team that performs in national poetry competitions.
