David Bates (born 30 April 1945) is a British historian.

Bates was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Nuneaton and the University of Exeter (BA, 1966; PhD, 1970).[1] He was Professor of Medieval History at the University of Glasgow from 1994 until 2003. He then took up the post of director of the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London between 2003 and 2008, and now holds a chair in Medieval History at the University of East Anglia.
