Dear John is a 2006 novel written by American author Nicholas Sparks. It explores the common romance theme of love after loss. Dear John is a three part book that starts out with 23 year-old John Tyree, an army veteran. It is set in Wilmington, NC and Lenoir, NC from 2000 to 2006.
A film adaptation of the novel, also named Dear John and directed by Lasse Hallström, was released in 2010.
Sparks has also written The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Last Song and Nights in Rodanthe, which, like Dear John, have been made into films.
