Sabina Nessa was killed on the evening of 17 September 2021 in Greenwich, London, while walking to meet a friend.

Background

Nessa worked as a teacher at Rushey Green primary school in Lewisham.[1] She was a graduate of University of Greenwich[2] and University of Bedfordshire[3] She graduated in sociology from Greenwich in 2014 and did her PGCE teaching certificate at Bedfordshire in 2020. She was 28 years old.

Incident and investigation

She was walking to meet a friend when she was attacked.[4]

Her body was found under a pile of leaves by a member of the public walking his dog in Cator Park the following afternoon, 21 hours later, near the One Space community centre on Kidbrooke Park Road.[5][6]

Police released CCTV footage in connection with the investigation.[7][8][9]

On 26 September, the police announced they had arrested a 38-year-old man in East Sussex in relation to the case.[10]

Reactions

Nessa's death attracted widespread media coverage[11] [12]and brought more pressure for action to tackle violence against women in London.[13] [4] London mayor Sadiq Khan described violence against women as a national "epidemic".[14]

Her death was compared to other recent deaths of Sarah Everard and Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry. As in the case of Smallman and Henry, Nessa's death raised concerned that the response to killings of women of colour were still taken less seriously by law enforcement.[1] [15]

Vigils were held in several cities held to honour her life, [1][16] [17] [18]Her family spoke at a rally at East London Mosque attended by faith leaders, women's groups and local politicians, including Rushanara Ali [19] [20] . A video message from Zara Mohammed, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council Britain was played at the mosque and a candle was lit at No 10 Downing Street [21]. A spokesperson from Citizens UK noted that the day Nessa was murdered was the same day the Government released its strategy on tackling violence against women and girls.[22]

Dame Vera Baird attended the vigil for Nessa in London and commented that societal change is needed and the police must do more. [9] Also in attendance at the London vigil were Zarah Sultana , Mandu Reid , Rabina Khan and Apsana Begum. [23] Flowers were laid on behalf of the Duchess of Cambridge. [24]
