The Department of Education and Training (DET) is a department of the Government of New South Wales with responsibility for primary schools, secondary schools and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges. In addition, the department oversees the provision of pre-school, adult, migrant and higher education in the state.

The Department's powers are principally drawn from the NSW Education Act 1990.[1]

Structure

The Department reports to the Minister for Education and Training, at present Verity Firth of the Australian Labor Party. The head of the Department is its Director-General, Michael Coutts-Trotter.
