Ashok Chakravarti (born 1 August 1947) is a development economist. He is a graduate of Delhi and Oxford Universities. For the past 45 years he has been providing advice to African governments[1][2]. In 2009 he was appointed Senior Visiting Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe [3]. Since 2019 he has been Senior Economic Advisor to the Minister of Finance, Government of Zimbabwe[4]. He is also the longest serving member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, having been appointed in 2020 [5]. He lives in Harare, Zimbabwe [6].

Early Life & Education[edit]

He did his schooling at Doon School, Dehra-Dun, at the foothills of the Himalayas. He is a graduate of St.Stephen's College, Delhi University and Oriel College, Oxford.

Career[edit]

In the late 70's, Chakravarti joined the Ministry of Industry, Government of India, and was part of the team that undertook policy work that later led to the liberalisation of the Indian economy. From 1981 to 1992, he then worked with UNCTAD and UNDP as an Economic Advisor. In 2004 led a major U.S. government supported program designed to establish the key institutions of government in the newly emergent war ravaged country of Southern Sudan. In this capacity he worked closely with the first President of Southern Sudan John Garang,and later with the current President Salva Kiir, to establish the central institutions of that government. Since 2019, Chakravarti has been working at the Senior Economic Advisor to the Minister of Finance, Government of Zimbabwe.

He is the author of several papers published in international peer reviewed journals. His research focus is on institutional economics. His most recent article on self interest is: "Imperfect Information and Opportunism".[7]

His two books on institutional economics are:

"Aid, Institutions and Development, 2006". Published by Edward Elgar, U.K.[8]

"Institutions, Economic Performance and the Visible Hand, 2012". Published by Edward Elgar, U.K.[9].

He is also the author of a book entitled "The Struggle Within", describing his experiences as an activist during the 1975 Emergency in India when the country was subjected to dictatorial rule [10].
