BEAST International Film Festival is a film festival that showcases Central and Eastern European film and takes place every year in Porto, Portugal. It is a project created by OKNA Associação Cultural. The festival was created in 2017 and has taken place every year since then with the exception of 2020 when the pandemic hit. Every year there is a different focus country, chosen from the 22 countries that make up Central and Eastern Europe. There is a mix of short and medium-length films as well as feature films.

Categories

The festival features the following categories:

  • East Wave shows short and medium-length fiction films.
  • East Doc shows short and medium-length documentaries.
  • Queer Shorts challenges preconceived notions of what it is like to be LGBT+ in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Experimental EAST features film that pushes the boundaries of classical cinema, testing out new techniques, narratives, and conventions.[1].

2022 Edition

The 2022 Edition is the 5th edition of the festival's focus country was Montenegro but also featured Ukraine in an act of solidarity with the country during the war[2]. It took place in 6 different venues around the city, including Cinema Trindade, Cinema Passos Manuel and Casa das Artes.

Past Editions

  • the 1st edition was held in 2017 and its focus country was Poland. This edition was held on a single day and was the only edition to offer free entrance[3].
  • By the 2nd edition of the festival, there were already 4 venues, and many more categories, taking the shape it has today more or less. The focus country was Ukraine[4]
  • the 3rd edition was held in 2019, and its focus country was Lithuania.
  • because of the COVID pandemic the 2020 edition was pushed back to an online Spring edition and fused with the 2021 to make one edition out of the two years. Normally the festival takes place around September or October.
  • The 2022 edition's focus country was Montenegro with its young but vibrant film culture.

Only short and medium-length films are considered in the festival's competition and jury is made up of a panel of 5 juries from Portugal and abroad.
