Battle

[edit]

:The Souliotes were alarmed of the movements of the Ottoman army and hurried on September 15 to the location of Five Wells,Georgios Drakos and Agos Mouhourdaris occupied the current positions. While the Turks who came from Arta found themselves facing the Greeks and after two hours of fighting they were humiliated and they retreated leaving over 100 dead, many prisoners as well as a big amount of munitions and food.

Aftermath

[edit]

The victory of the Greeks was sealed two days later, on September 17, when the force coming from Ioannina, unaware of the early destruction of the Ottoman turks, reached the straits. The leader Mustafa Pasha was worried about the other Ottoman forces which were currently missing, but not wanting to abandon his mission, he entered the straits and suddenly found himself facing the Souliotes. He then attempted to encircle them by charging a force of 1,000 Ottoman soldiers to move towards the Souliotes. Mouhourdaris, however, found about the movement in time and ordered 50 of his soldiers to climb the heights, above the positions of this Turkish division, to hide and attack, when the battle progresses. In the meantime, Mustafa Pasha had attacked without success against Muhurdaris who was left with only 150 men. He then tried to attack the 350 men of the Dragon, but there too he met great resistance. At the same time, the body of 1,000 Ottoman turks had been hit from behind by Mouhourdaris' men. The Turkish army then got destroyed, because their officer Elmaz Bey had died. The Souliotes then rushed in and chased them away from the crossing. In this second battle of the Five Wells the Turks lost 200 soldiers, the Greeks only 3 and their Turkalvan allies only 12.
