Céline Shen is a French multidisciplinary artist of Chinese origin. Her work explores the redefinition of the wardrobe of the contemporary female figure through a poetic space loaded with fragments of an intimate and multicultural cosmology, sensitive and technical. She deploys constitutive elements of an aesthetic and intellectual vocabulary in the form of choreographic notations, taking into consideration Nature, the Feminine and extraterrestrial territories.
Her digital works intertwine a perspective where the machine, connected to what she calls virtual "network worlds", highlights invisible dimensions, auras reconstituting a cosmology crossing interstellar fictions. Céline Shen is resolutely part of an approach questioning the porosity between the arts in her conception of creation. She likes to lean on social issues that she approaches through devices linking video, photo, clothing, sculpture, music, choreographic writing practice, painting, AI and digital arts, proposing a questioning imbued with poetry. She develops an "Imaginale" vision to construct a work in perpetual evolution.
Training and Influences:
After studying philosophy at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, at the Institut Supérieur des Arts et des Chorégraphies at the ArBA-EsA (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels) and at the ENSAD (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs), the artist is influenced by the writings of Walter Benjamin, Gernot Böhme and the choreographies of Yvonne Rainer. These inspirations are found in the artist's projects, which offer aesthetically accomplished work, connected to societal and artistic questions related to authentication, copying and reproduction, domestic spaces and the potential of clothing design, similar to the design for disassembly movement of the 90s, which engages in a sustainable temporality and a logic of appropriation and personal and intimate construction of clothing.
Achievements and Awards:
Winner of the ADAGP “Révélation Design” prize in 2019, a portrait on the ARTE channel was dedicated to her. Winner of the Zeugma innovation prize in 2021, she joined the Station F incubator the following year. In 2022, she was invited to the (R)EVOLUTION NFT conference at the Institut de France, organized by the Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Conseil des Ventes during the launch of her first digital art collections in NFT. In March 2023, she opened a temporary phygital gallery, bringing a new innovative experience at the crossroads of dynamics borrowed from the traditional art market, in particular the secondary market, and the codes of web 3.0 in art and design. In September 2023, she co-founded Orion 3000, a web 3.0 platform celebrating and exploring the vastness of the universe through digital art. O3's mission is to promote a new era of collective intelligence embracing the vast regions of Space that are still unknown. Composed of engineers, scientists, futurists and artists, O3 forms a community passionate about technologies and Space, pushing the limits of geocentric thinking on terrestrial space. With O3, new geographies are being redrawn, the stellar horizon is moving beyond the perimeters of the solar system, forming the hatching of a nursery of artistic projects speculating on cultures of worlds to come, engaged in a policy of environmental care and driving innovative formats of creation.
Recent Projects:
In the fall of 2023, Céline Shen presents a choreographic show on the theme of robot machines in collaboration with Softbank Robotics and Lutin Userlab of the Cité des sciences, and deploys an augmented reality tour in the Tuileries gardens as part of the DRP festival. She is also the guest artist for the solo exhibition "NEXUS DESIGN" for the Novembre Innovation event organized by the Consulate of Hong Kong and Macao in partnership with the Institut Français. 2023 is also marked by her solo exhibition "COSMOLOGIES" dedicated to the Arts, Clothing Design and new technologies in the heart of Paris, at the Garage Amelot. Currently, she is developing an artistic and augmented design research project with Parisian scientific laboratories. Céline Shen continues to push the boundaries of art and technology, creating works that question and re-imagine our relationship with the world.
