Chao Pass is a pass used by General Aviation aircraft flying in the Fiordland National Park.[1] It is located between Mt Cross Cut and Mt Christina at an elevation of 1930m above mean sea level.[2] This pass is significant for pilots due its prominent location and ability to be used a reference during flights in the Fiordland National Park.[citation needed]
Chao Pass is known to be named after an ancient Chinese gold miner. The Chao family was known to be one of larger families in the Arrowtown gold mining area.[3]
