DeFence was a large-scale performance / happening conceived by Greek composer Dimitris Maronidis. It premiered at the Megaron Concert Hall in Thessaloniki on the evening of June 21, 2019[1], during World Music Day. The event was massive as it involved over 100 performers, including students from the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University and the National Theater of Thessaloniki. The performance was co-directed by Michalis Sionas
Concept and execution
[edit]DeFence centered on the symbolic act of demolishing a metal fence, representing the breaking down of barriers and opposition to isolation and oppression. Participants, mostly students of fine arts, used various construction tools to dismantle a metal fence surrounding the concert hall of Thessaloniki. The whole event lasted approximately one hour and was characterised by an extremely dense and dramatic action that was accompanied by a dynamic electronic soundscape and an immersive sonic amplification. The performance was co-ordinated by four conductors receiving real-time instructions from the composer, creating an ordered set of actions that were performed by four groups of performers. Special lighting was used to amplify the movements on the fence.
Symbolism and philosophical aspects
[edit]DeFence is a powerful metaphor for the deconstruction of physical, social, and ideological barriers. The act of dismantling a fence out of a prestigious institution symbolizes the collective effort required to overcome divisions and promote unity. By involving a large and diverse group of performers, the installation emphasized the importance of community and collaboration in addressing societal issues.
The use of the interactive electronic soundscape added an auditory dimension to the visual and physical actions, reinforcing the theme of transformation. The evolving soundscape mirrored the gradual demolition of the fence, suggesting that breaking down barriers is a dynamic and ongoing process.
