Detour is a 2003 thriller film written and directed by Steve Taylor. The film stars Ashley Elizabeth Reed, Aaron Buer, Brent Taylor, Danna Brady, Kelsey Wedeen, Jessica Osfar, and Tiffany Shepis. The plot of the film bares great resemblance to The Hills Have Eyes and Wrong Turn.
Plot
[edit]While returning to Los Angeles in a trailer through the desert, the driver Neil convinces his friends Tara, Harmony, Loopz, Michelle, Lee, and "Cashie" to take a detour to an isolated mine where there could be a plantation of Peyote. The owner of a gas station advises the group to not go to the mine, but Neil stubbornly doesn't pay attention.
While driving in a secondary road, Neil sees a girl and wrecks the trailer. He decides to walk back to the gas station to call a tow truck, while Michelle and Lee climb a hill trying to get signal to their cell phones.
Eventually, the teenagers discover that a group of drug crazed, sadisticly deformed Cannibals have their hearts set on killing (and presumably eating) them. Over the course of the night, they are all picked off one by one and the last shot shows the killer approaching the final girl.
Production
[edit]Filming was completed in February of 2002, but was not released until nearly two years later, in December of 2003.[1] Tiffany Shepis was cast to give the picture "big name" actors.[2]
Reception
[edit]Reel Film Reviews gave the film two and half stars out of five, saying "The film's eagerness to provide our heroes with enough opposition seems a little over the top, with villains consistently emerging out of nowhere."[3]
