The song "Flower of Freedom" is by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, with lyrics written by Chow Lai Mou. It is set to the tune of Taiwanese singer Zheng Zhihua's song "Sailor."[1]
introduction
[edit]On June 4, 1989, the Tiananmen Square incident occurred. In 1993, members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (HKASPDMC) saw democracy activist Wang Xizhe hum the chorus of "Sailor" at a press conference following his release. This inspired them to ask Chow Lai Mou to rewrite the lyrics. Chow Lai Mou adapted the song into Cantonese, using subtle language to recount the events of "that year, that night."[2][3]
In recent years, at the annual June 4th candlelight vigil in Hong Kong's Victoria Park, the crowd sings "Freedom Flower," with the line "But there is a dream that will not die, remember this! No matter how the rain falls, freedom will still blossom" becoming particularly well-known. "Freedom Flower" has thus become the theme song for Hong Kong's June 4th memorial activities. In addition to the Cantonese version, there is also a Mandarin version of the song.
During the Umbrella Movement in 2014, it also became one of the associated songs.
original song
[edit]"Sailor" tells the story of Zheng Zhihua's experience with polio. After performing it on China Central Television, it became a well-known song throughout mainland China.
