Fred Jung is an American politician serving as Mayor Pro Tem of Fullerton, California.[1] Born in Seoul, South Korea, Jung immigrated to the United States at a young age and has been a resident of Fullerton District 1 since 1987[1]. He made history by becoming the first Asian-American member of the Fullerton City Council in over 20 years after being elected to represent Council District 1 in November 2020. Jung has been actively involved in public service, previously serving on the Parks and Recreation Commission and Traffic and Circulation Commission.[1]

Biography

Fred Jung is a South Korean-born American who immigrated to the United States at 5. He has lived in Fullerton District 1 since 1987. Jung is an alumnus of Sunny Hills High School and the University of Southern California. He is known for his dedication to the community, having volunteered as a football coach for many years. Jung resides in Fullerton with his wife, Mandy, and is a father and grandfather.[2]

Career

Fred Jung is an entrepreneur and community leader known for his successful small businesses and dedication to youth sports. As the founder of North Orange County's largest youth sports nonprofit organization, the Fullerton Bears, he has significantly impacted the community. Also, Jung has been involved in jazz, having started several jazz magazines, including All About Jazz Los Angeles, All About Jazz Chicago, All About Jazz San Francisco, and Jazz Weekly. His contributions to the jazz community extend to serving on the Board of Directors of the Jazz Journalists Association. Throughout his career, Jung has demonstrated a passion for business and community service, making him a respected figure in both realms.[1]

Political Career

Fred Jung is a prominent American politician who was first elected in 2020. Before his current role, he served as a two-term Mayor of Fullerton. Mayor Pro Tem Jung is known for his extensive involvement in various committees and organizations. He serves as the Chairman of the Transit Committee to the Orange County Transportation Authority,[3] representing the 4th Supervisorial District. Additionally, he is Chairman of the Orange County Power Authority [4]and the Legislative and Communications Committee of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.[5] Mayor Pro Tem Jung has also been elected Vice Chairman of the State Route 91 Advisory Committee and the State of California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act Compliance Committee[1]. Moreover, he is a Director of the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy [6], [6]and he serves on the SCAG Policy Committee for the Orange County Council of Governments[7]. In addition, Mayor Pro Tem Jung is the Vice Chairman of the Cal Cities Transportation, Communications, and Public Works Committee and holds the role of Large City Representative on the Cal Cities Board of Directors.[8]

Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Mayor Pro Tem Jung to the California State Mining and Geology Board for four years. [9]Notably, he also served as the Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee of the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District. He was a Director of the Orange County Housing Finance Trust.
