The Funicular Xavier (Croatian: Uspinjača Ksaver) is a funicular in Zagreb, Croatia. It is situated in Ksaver district, 2km north of the Zagreb funicular.

The funicular has four stations and is intended to help locals, especially elderly residents of the area, avoid climbing the steep hill using stairs..[1]

History

[edit]

Zagreb was expected to get a second funicular in the early 1980s . Originally built and used to transport building materials during construction in the Ksaver region, the machinery was allowed to fall into disrepair and never used to service the local population. For over 30 years stairs were the only connection between residential and commercial spaces in the area.[2]

After a campaign by Ksaver locals, the mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandić arranged for the city to provide over 2 million Croatian kuna to renovate the funicular.[3]. Because of this, the funicular re-opened in 2013 and the cabin now carries the printed arms of the city of Zagreb and there are plaques at both ends of the railway thanking Bandić for his efforts.[4]

After opening, the funicular regularly malfunctioned, needing more than 100 repairs in a five year period at an extra cost of nearly 1 million kuna. In 2020 it was reported it did not meet new health & safety requirements and more work was required.[5]
