Hua Parakore is an indigenous food production verification system. It was developed by Te Waka Kai Ora (The National Māori Organics Authority of Aotearoa New Zealand)[1]. The verification process of Hua Parakore is community-driven and was developed in collaboration the with indigenous communities and researchers [2] [3] .
The system verifies that food production (and other goods such as meat, wools, traditional medicines etc.) are made to a high organic standard and adhere to kaupapa Māori . Practices of food growers who are who are verified must be sustainable and growers must uplift indigenous food sovereignty. [4]. After announcement of a launch in September 2010, Te Waka Kai Ora publicly launched Hua Parakore accreditation label for food producers during Matariki in 2011[5] [6] .
