Submission declined on 20 June 2024 by MicrobiologyMarcus (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia. This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies.

- Comment: This reads like promo blurb from a website or marketing literature of some sort. Has this been copypasted from somewhere? DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:40, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
K. Shereef (Born in 1974) was an Indian painter and Illustrator. He illustrated for many Malayalam writers Such as Punathil Kunjabdulla, Paul Zacharia, N. S. Madhavan, Anand, Benyamin and he is one of the greatest living literary illustrator from india. He is also Senior Artist of Mathrbhoomi Weekly. He is the Cover artist of Aadujeevitham a best selling novel in malayalam.
Early Life and Career
[edit]He is a self-taught artist from Kerala, has carved out a unique niche in the world of contemporary Indian art. Kozhikode, Shereef’s journey into the arts began in a rather unconventional manner. His work, characterized by its intimate portrayal of marginalized lives and quotidian struggles, offers a poignant reflection on human conditions, often drawing from both personal experiences and broader societal issues.[1]
Shereef’s early life in the rural settings of Kerala profoundly influenced his artistic vision. Unlike many artists who follow formal education in fine arts, Shereef’s path was self-directed. His first foray into the arts was as a freelance illustrator for Malayalam publications. His illustrations quickly gained recognition for their depth and unique style, leading him to work with prominent magazines such as Malayalam Literary Survey, Kumkumam Weekly, Madhyamam Weekly, and Bhashaposhini Monthly.[2]
Artistic Style and Themes
[edit]Shereef’s artistic oeuvre spans across illustrations, paintings, collages, and poetry. His works are marked by a grim yet intimate portrayal of life, often focusing on the overlooked and marginalized aspects of society. Shereef’s style is heavily influenced by a variety of sources, from European masters like Brueghel and Beckmann to the local art traditions of Kerala. His art is a curious assemblage of materials, often employing collage techniques to create surfaces that tell complex stories of human existence.[3]
One of the defining characteristics of Shereef’s work is his ability to capture the ‘commonplace rubbish-ness of life’ as described by art writer P. Sudhakaran. His pieces do not merely depict scenes but evoke the textures and emotions of everyday experiences. This approach makes his work resonate deeply with viewers, offering a raw and unfiltered look at the world through his eyes.[4]
Literary Contributions
[edit]In addition to his visual art, Shereef is also a poet. His anthology, “Thilangunna Ilam Manja” (Fading Young Yellow), showcases his literary prowess, echoing the same themes of introspection and social commentary found in his visual works. His poetry often explores the delicate balance between hope and despair, mirroring the intricate narratives of his illustrations and paintings.[5]
Shereef's literary contributions are also recognized in Malayalam literature circles. His works are featured in Mathrubhumi, a leading Malayalam publication, where his unique voice continues to enrich the literary landscape of Kerala.[6][7][8][9][10]
Impact and Recognition
[edit]Despite his significant contributions to the art world, Shereef remains somewhat of an outsider in the mainstream art gallery circuit. His reluctance to conform to the commercial demands of the art market has allowed him to maintain a distinct and authentic voice. This authenticity has earned him a dedicated following among art lovers and critics who appreciate his honest and unvarnished portrayal of life.[11]
Shereef’s work has been featured in various exhibitions and has received critical acclaim for its originality and emotional depth. His ability to blend traditional and contemporary elements in his art has made him a unique figure in the Indian art scene, bridging the gap between local cultural narratives and broader artistic movements.
Personal Philosophy and Influence
[edit]Shereef’s art is deeply personal, reflecting his own experiences and observations of the world around him. He views art as a medium for storytelling, a way to give voice to the voiceless and to shed light on the often ignored facets of life. His works are imbued with a sense of social responsibility, aiming to provoke thought and inspire change.
In an interview, Shereef mentioned that his art is not just about aesthetics but about conveying a message. He believes that art should challenge the status quo and make people uncomfortable in their complacency. This philosophy is evident in his works, which often depict harsh realities and evoke strong emotional responses from the audience.
