There are currently seven active medical schools in Lebanon according to the International Medical Education Directory:[1]

  1. American University of Beirut (AUB)
  2. Beirut Arab University (BAU)
  3. Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK)
  4. Lebanese American University (LAU)
  5. Lebanese University (LU)
  6. University of Balamand (UofB)
  7. University of Saint Joseph (USJ)[2]


Only five medical schools in the Eastern Mediterranean Region were established before 1900. Lebanon has two of the oldest medical schools in the region [3]. Three medical schools in Lebanon were established after the year 2000.

There is a high density of medical schools in Lebanon (1.72 per million) [3] and a high number of doctors (35.4 per 10,000) for a population of 4.1 million.

Six out of the seven medical schools in Lebanon are private.

The language of instruction varies between English and French.

American University of Beirut (AUB), Faculty of Medicine & Medical Center

The American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine was established in 1868 [3]

The American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) is a leader in the healthcare field in the region. It is accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCIA) and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.[4]

Language of instruction: English.

Beirut Arab University (BAU), Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1995. The first Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery was awarded in 2001.

BAU is a private institution for higher education, located in the heart of the beating city of Beirut.[4]

Language of instruction: English.

Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK)

In accordance with the mission of the Lebanese Maronite Order (O.L.M), with its 300-year tradition and principles, and wishing to contribute to the development of the medical sector and health services in Lebanon, the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) created the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences, with the express purpose of providing initial and a continuing education of general practitioners and specialists.

Devoted to helping the development of competent professionals and, simultaneously, to be at the service of all, the School participates in the advancement of knowledge in the field of health and aims to be nationally and internationally recognized for to the excellent quality of its teaching programs. The School's work is based on the values of excellence, humanism, intellectual rigor and the application of high moral standards through a continuously evolving medical education and introduction to research, in the clinical domain, public health and basic research. Theoretical studies take place at the School and training at the University Hospital Center, "Notre Dame des Secours", in Jbeil.

Lebanese American University (LAU) School of Medicine

LAU is an American institution chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and operating in Lebanon.

The M.D. degree is a four-year program (Med I-Med IV) at the end of which a Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree will be granted to successful candidates.[4]

Lebanese University, Faculty of Medical Sciences

The Lebanese University is the only public medical school in Lebanon. The Faculty of Medical Sciences at the Lebanese University was established in 1983. It provided a space for distinguished students from different social classes in Lebanon to turn their dreams into reality and study medicine for minor fees.

The branches of the Faculty of Medical Sciences were merged in 1996 forming a unit tasked with graduating the best physicians, who would be recognized at the local and global levels, and known for their top-notch scientific competencies, complete training and professional ethics.[6]

The Faculty now comprises 1,263 students.

Language of instruction: English and French.

University of Balamand, Faculty of Medicine & Medical Sciences

The University of Balamand (UOB) is a private, non-profit, independent institution of higher learning founded in 1988.

The University of Balamand established the Faculty of Medicine in the year 2000 in association with the St. George Hospital – University Medical Center.[4]

Language of instruction: English.

University of Saint-Joseph, Faculty of Medicine

Established in 1883.[7] The Institute of Medicine founded in 1883, would become the Faculty of Medicine in 1888. then the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1889[8].

Language of instruction: French.

Graduates of Lebanese medical schools in the United States

In 2004, there were 2,796 LMG in the US, constituting 1.3% of all IMG. Compared to other foreign countries contributing to the US physician workforce, Lebanon ranked 2nd after adjusting for country population size (about 4 million) and 21st overall. About 40% of those who graduated from Lebanese medical schools in the last 25 years are currently active physicians in the US. Since 1978, the number of LMG in the US showed a consistent upward trend at a rate of approximately 71 additional graduates per year.[9]
