MKM Building Supplies is a UK builder's merchant based in Kingston upon Hull. Founded in 1995, the company has over 120 branches across the country.[3][4]
History
[edit]On 12 September 1995, close friends David Kilburn and Peter Murray co-founded MK Building Supplies Ltd.[1][5] The company's name would be altered less than two weeks later to become MKM Building Supplies Ltd, a name which has since remained unchanged.[1] The first business the company made was providing plumbing and heating supplies to caravan manufacturers.[6] Murray sold his company shares in 2006, whilst Kilburn has continued to run MKM to this day.[6]
Having grown out of its home in Hull, where the company also opened its first branch,[3] MKM has spread wide across the UK, predominantly throughout the north of England.[4] In September 2022, the company opened its 100th branch, in Bromsgrove.[7]
On 19 June 2023, it was announced that Kilburn was to be awarded a CBE by King Charles III in his inaugural Birthday Honours list for his services to the construction industry and charity.[8] He would receive the award at an investiture ceremony on 31 January 2024.[9] A few months prior, on 22 November 2023, Kilburn had also received the 'Outstanding Contribution to Business' award at the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards.[5]
On 20 February 2024, MKM acquired Oceanair UK to help grow into the market of heating and ventilation.[10][11][12] Soon after, MKM came under criticism after the company had been named by the Department for Business and Trade for not paying staff the minimum wage.[13][14]
Sponsorships
[edit]The company have been associated with the originally named KC Stadium in Hull since its opening in December 2002.[15][16] However, on 25 June 2021, it was announced that MKM had bought the exclusive naming rights for the 25,586 capacity venue,[16] which is home to two of the city's top sports teams.[15] Hull K.R. announced on 1 February 2024 that MKM was to join the club as a platinum partner,[17] becoming the third of Hull's top sports teams to be associated with the company.
MKM are also club partners with both Dundee F.C.[18] and Dundee United,[19] having opened a branch in Dundee in February 2020.[20] On 9 August 2023, rugby league club Barrow Raiders announced that MKM had agreed a two-year sponsorship deal with the RFL Championship side.[21] On 20 September 2023, the company then partnered with Wakefield Trinity[22] after opening a Wakefield branch in July 2023.[23]
