Marwan Fakih, M.D., born on November 16, 1968, Beirut, is a Lebanese/American oncologist. Dr. Fakih has received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, in 1992. He has subsequently completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Detroit Medical Center/ Wayne state University (1992-95) and a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at University of Pittsburgh (1998-2001).
Dr. Fakih’s academic career started at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) where he was appointed as a tenured-track Associate Professor in Internal Medicine (University at Buffalo/ RPCI) and as the Head of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Section. He subsequently joined University of Michigan as Professor of Medicine in 2010, where he served as the Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer program. Dr. Fakih joined City of Hope in 2012 where he serves as the Section Head of Gastrointestinal Cancers, co-Director of the Phase I Program, and the Director of the Clinical Research Unit. Across all three institutes, he has been involved in educational activities and fellow-mentoring, receiving the Best Teaching Award several years in a row and has been named multiple times by Castle Connolly as one of “America's Top Doctors.”
Dr. Fakih serves on numerous national committees and editorial boards. He is a member of the NCI Colorectal Cancer Task Force, SWOG Gastrointestinal Cancer core committee, NRG Colorectal Cancer core committee, ACCRU Gastrointestinal Cancer core committee, and the NCCN Board of Directors. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
Over the past 17 years, Dr. Fakih’s career focused on colorectal cancer research and clinical drug development (phase I/II trials). A prolific publisher, he has authored over 240 papers and conducted numerous investigator-initiated trials in patients with solid tumors and colorectal cancer, including cytotoxic, targeted, and immunotherapeutic agents. These, among other research efforts, resulted in more than 130 peer-reviewed articles.
Dr. Fakih is passionate about educating his patients every step of the way. For him, “The most important thing in being an oncologist is to be there for your patient.”
