After graduating from George Mason University with a degree in journalism, Coppinger wrote for several publications, including USA TODAY and The Athletic, before he joined ESPN as its lead boxing reporter in July 2021.

[edit]Mike Coppinger was born on April 28, 1986, in Brooklyn, New York. He later moved to Miami Beach, Florida, where he currently resides. Coppinger graduated from George Mason University with a degree in journalism,[1] which helped lay the foundation for his successful career as a sportswriter and reporter.
Career
[edit]Coppinger began his career as a sports journalist, covering a wide range of sports before focusing primarily on boxing. Early in his career, he contributed to several notable publications, including USA TODAY and The Athletic.
During the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons, Coppinger served as the Anaheim Ducks beat reporter for the L.A. Times,[2] covering the NHL team in great detail. His versatility as a reporter also extended to other major sports. He covered the NFL, NBA, and NHL for USA TODAY, as well as providing coverage for WWE, including two WrestleMania events.[3]
Coppinger was the insider on the "Inside PBC Boxing" show on FOX in 2019,[4] his first extended time on television.
In July 2021, Coppinger joined ESPN as its lead boxing reporter and became known as the network's Boxing Insider. In this role, he has gained widespread recognition for his comprehensive coverage of boxing, from breaking news and exclusive interviews to in-depth analysis of major boxing events. Coppinger's work is regularly cited by media outlets, and he is widely respected within the boxing community. Among the notable subjects he's profiled while at ESPN with in-depth interviews: Canelo Alvarez, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Tyson Fury. It was announced in October 2023 that Coppinger signed an extension with ESPN.[5]

He is known for breaking significant stories and offering expert commentary on boxing's biggest events. His reporting spans not only match results but also business and behind-the-scenes developments in the sport, making him a trusted source for boxing fans. He's an elector for the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2023, he was denied a press credential[6] for Terence Crawford's TKO win over Errol Spence Jr., in Las Vegas.
