Moorfields Eye Charity is a charity in the UK that funds research and innovation in eye health. The two main activities the charity engages in are fundraising and grant-making.[1]
The charity supports the work of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and its research partner, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology[2] by raising funds for research, education, equipment and new approaches to service delivery that benefit patients with sight loss. [3]
In partnership with Moorfields and UCL, Moorfields Eye Charity is working to create a new eye health centre, a joint initiative to create a new centre for advancing research, clinical care and teaching in eye health in St Pancras, in London’s knowledge quarter, opening in 2027.
History
Moorfields Eye Charity is an independent charity founded in 2011 and formed through the merger of various charitable and philanthropic activities connected to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This merger was completed in April 2017.[4]
Organisation
The charity’s headquarters are in London, England. Moorfields Eye Charity has a six-year strategy (2021-2027) that outlines their objectives for the charity and their role supporting the work of Moorfields and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
The strategy outlines seven main objectives:
• Create a world class integrated centre for advancing eye health, teaching and research in 2027
• Be the leading charity for research into eye health
• Support patient care
• Support sharing knowledge
• Shape national policy
• Maximise sustainable and flexible support
• Attract, retain and develop talent[5]
Governance
Moorfields Eye Charity is governed by a board of trustees who meet four times a year. There are currently eleven trustees on the board.
