Naver Dictionary (Korean: 네이버 사전) is an online dictionary operated by the South Korean software company Naver.[1] It was first launched in 1999, alongside the launching of the Naver web portal.[2][3] As of 2024[update], it supports 67 languages.[4]
Description
[edit]The dictionary was launched in 1999, alongside the launching of the Naver web portal. It supported the English language upon its launch.[3][5] It began launching mobile applications in 2010.[6] The product Line Dictionary, launched in 2014, was part of the platform.[2] By 2022, the platform reportedly had 60 different subservices.[7] It was the most popular dictionary in South Korea by 2021.[8]
Multiple definitions of words are provided, and a Korean audio pronunciation service is offered, with readings by a Korean news anchor.[1] Korean words can be searched by taking photos of writing or recording speaking.[9] The dictionary has partnered with and shows results from various other dictionaries, including Oxford Dictionary of English[10] and the Collins English Dictionary.[11] In 2014, it was reported that Naver spent ₩100 billion per year to gain access to databases and reference materials.[12] The dictionary also shows definitions from Wiktionary and Urban Dictionary, the inclusion of the latter of which has drawn some controversy.[10] The dictionary also aggregates other Korean-language dictionaries. In 2014, it it began showing results from the Dictionary of Tourism Terms (관광용어 용례사전) by the Korea Tourism Organization. In 2020, it added a Jeolla dialect dictionary. In 2023 it began showing results from the Multilingual Dictionary of Korean Art Teminology (한국미술 다국어 용어사전).[13] It supports definitions from the online dictionary Urimalsaem, which is operated by the National Institute of Korean Language.[5]
The dictionary offers definitions in multiple languages.[9] By 2015, the dictionary supported 19 languages.[2] It supported 37 by 2016.[3] That year it announced that it would invest in expanding and improving its existing dictionaries, in part by including images, audio, and video.[3][5] It also has a number of sub-dictionaries for various languages. In 2015, it launched a Chinese-Korean dictionary. In 2016, Naver Dictionary began operating a Vietnamese-Korean dictionary; the dictionary reportedly was used by 32.6% of mobile users in Vietnam.[1] In July 2017, it launched an English-Korean dictionary.[9] It offers dictionaries in various other languages, including Greek, Burmese, Tetum, and Hebrew.[13] It supported 41 languages by 2018,[5] and 55 languages by 2021.[8]
In 2018, it launched an open-source dictionary called Open Dictionary PRO (ODP).[5] The service aggregates various dictionaries, glossaries, encyclopedias, images, video, and audio related to definitions. Users are able to create their own dictionaries on the platform.[7] In June 2023, the South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety began offering standardized translations for public signs in eight languages on the platform.[14]
