Sarah Rosenblatt known professionally as Syan Rose is a queer illustrator, comic artist and printmaker known for their work addressing anti-racist feminism, social movements, and politicized identities.[1]

She was awarded GAP 2016 funding for her project Queer and Trans Resistance Comix, a comic series of illustrated interviews with Queer and Trans activists exploring themes of resistance, identity, and self-determination.[2]

She was also the finalist for Lambda Literary Award for Graphic Novel/Comics at 34th Lambda Literary Awards[3] She has been published in Bitch, Slate, Gay Magazine, Truthout, and Autostraddle.[4]

Work[edit]

Rose's artistic career began with studies in drawing, printmaking, and bookmaking, as well as sociology and gender.[2]

Her work often focuses on narratives from diverse voices within the LGBTQIA+ community. She received the funding for her project Queer and Trans Resistance Comix, a series of illustrated interviews with activists.[5]

In 2021, Rose published "Our Work Is Everywhere: An Illustrated Oral History of Queer and Trans Resistance, which started as a zine project and evolved into a published book.[6]

Style and inspiration[edit]

Rose's artistic style blends representational and surrealist imagery, aiming to visually map out complex political ideas and personal experiences.[1] Her comics journalism has been featured on platforms like Truth-out.org and Autostraddle, covering topics such as anti-capitalist education reform, body politics, and the prison industrial complex.[7]

She cites artists like Kara Walker, Ness Lee, Marjane Satrapi, Alison Bechdel, and Jillian Tamaki as influences.[1]
