Vea Margaret Mafile'o (November 9, 1981 – ) is a Tongan film director. She is known for her recent short film Lea Tupu'anga/Mother Tongue, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in 2024.[1]
Personal life
[edit]Vea Mafile'o was born on November 9, 1981 in Hamilton, New Zealand, the daughter of a Tongan father and English and Scottish mother. She attended Hillcrest High School and Manukau Institute of Technology.[2]
Career
[edit]Lea Tupu'anga/Mother Tongue was inspired by the language insecurity of Luciane Buchanan, a Kiwi/Tongan actress who co-created the film.[1]
