Virtual Girl Nem (Japanese: バーチャル美少女ねむ) is an individual VTuber. She is also active as a metaverse culture evangelist, an official HTC VIVE ambassador, a VTuber project producer, a blogger, a cryptocurrency investor, an author, and a singer.

Overview

[edit]

Since the end of 2017, she has been active as a virtual YouTuber (VTuber) even before the boom, claiming to be the oldest individual VTuber in the world.[2][3][4][5]

In January 2020, she appeared as a guest on NHK(Japanese national broadcaster)'s "Nehorin Pahorin" program, where her phrase "Bishojo (Cute girl character) is a Karesansui (Japanese traditional dry garden)" was a topic of discussion, explaining Babiniku (Becoming virtual girl character in a virtual world) as a new type of Japanese traditional culture.[6][7][8]

As a VTuber project producer, she has produced various events such as the "Babiniku Singing Battle[9][10]" and "Virtual Snow Festival.[11][12]"

Beyond the realm of VTubers, she has won awards as an author and have been active as a metaverse culture evangelist. In December 2023, she was selected as the "Most Brilliant VTuber of the Year" at the "MoguLive VTuber Award 2023," organized by the MoguLive editorial department.[13][14]

Contribution to avatar culture

[edit]

She utilizes both a 2D avatar model called '2D Virtual Girl Mode' for facial recognition using FaceRig, and a 3D avatar model called '3D Virtual Girl Mode'[15] for VR distribution using VRChat, Neos VR, Resonite, Virtual Cast, cluster, etc., adapting them according to their intended purposes. Furthermore, she disseminates information on how to utilize avatars to become VTubers.

She argues "Metaverse Evolution Theory" that avatars bring about innovation that could be considered an "evolution" for humanity through three aspects[16]: "Identity Cosplay," where one can freely design their identity using avatars, "Communication Cosplay," where essential communication between souls is accelerated, and "Economic Cosplay," where multifaceted economic participation (dividual economics) becomes possible. She also promotes the "Human Bishojo Project," which aims to verify the hypothesis that more people will choose kawaii (cute) character forms when they can freely choose their "desired self."[17]

In December 2022, she was awarded the "Avatar Award Special Achievement Award," presented by the General Incorporated Association VRM Consortium, as the "Virtual Character that Contributed Most to the Development of Avatar Culture," following Kizuna AI in 2020.[18][19]

As an author

[edit]

In January 2019, she conducted a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for writing and publishing a novel, achieving 400% of the target amount[20]. Subsequently, she published "Virtual Girls Singularity," which depicts the potential for human evolution with the theme of virtual YouTubers.[21][22] The book ranked third in the "This Self-Publishing is Amazing! 2020 Edition" reader rankings and achieved first place in the Amazon bestseller ranking in the "Novel & Literary" category.[23]

In March 2022, their book "Metaverse Evolution Theory: A New World of 'Liberation' and 'Creation' Sprouting in the Wilderness of Virtual Reality,[24][25][26][27][28]" published by Gijutsu-Hyohron Co., Ltd., reached first place in the Amazon bestseller ranking in the "Multimedia" category.[29][30][31] It was also awarded the grand prize in the Business Book category at the "IT Engineer Book Awards 2023."[32][33]

As a metaverse culture evangelist

[edit]

She conduct activities introducing VR technology and metaverse culture on YouTube and note, and have appeared on various TV programs featuring metaverse specials.[34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]

In May 2020, she was selected as an "Official VIVE Ambassador" by HTC, the manufacturer of VR equipment "VIVE."[43][44][45]

In October 2021, she presented a lifestyle survey report "Social VR Lifestyle Survey 2021," which surveyed 1,200 users of the metaverse, together with anthropologist Ludmila Bredikhina from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.[46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54]

On October 8, 2022, she delivered a lecture titled "Dialogue with Metaverse Residents: New Identities and Diversity" in English at the international conference "IGF Kyoto 2023" organized by the United Nations.[55][56][57][58][59]
