Construction of the school and the high school on the same site, were announced in 2019 to relieve overcrowding in the Bedford area.[1][2] The school opened in 2023, along with West Bedford High. As of summer 2024, the school has 1251 students enrolled.[3]

Programs

[edit]

West Bedford School offers early French immersion for students, allowing students to enter into the program in grade primary[4] The program goes on until students finish at the school or they opt out.

Design

[edit]

West Bedford School and West Bedford High are both in one site. According to the designers of the school, Architecture49, the schools share central services such as electrical and mechanical systems. They also say the building has a central area, containing a cafeteria dedicated for events, libraries, art rooms, technology areas and labs.[5]

The school has a single playground and a field.
In total, the main part[a] of the site has capacity for about 2000 students.[6]

History

[edit]

Construction

[edit]

Construction of West Bedford School was announced in June 2019 by the Halifax Regional Centre for Education to relieve overcrowding when land was being cleared for the building.[2] A few months later in November, the high school was announced to be built on the same site.[1]

In September 2023, construction finished, and the school opened as West Bedford School and so did West Bedford High.

Overcrowding

[edit]

In April 2024, just a year after the schools opening, with rapid growth in Bedford, Nova Scotia leading to even more overcrowding, the HRCE announced that would be installing 2 modular extensions adding 12 classrooms in total. At the time the school had a single playground and was unable to use the field due to a lack of supervision. With that, some parents shared concerns over the lack of outdoor space, and the wellbeing of their child.[7]
CBC News predicted the site to go from 1 800 students enrolled at the time to 2 100 by September of that year, and 2 300 by 2025.[6]
