Z. Z. Wei

Z.Z. Wei (1957–) is a Chinese American visual artist. Wei's paintings articulate a powerful and unique perspective of the American landscapes. "The subjects might seem simple on the surface, but these are richly complex paintings that tempt us with their deeper, somehow hidden meaning."[1]

Biography[edit]

Born Zhao-Bai-Wei 赵柏巍 in Beijing, China, Z.Z. Wei started painting at a young age during China's Cultural Revolution. He attended the Central Institute of Arts and Design 中央工艺美术学院 [2] and graduated in 1984. While still residing in China, Wei's sculptures were included in two major contemporary art exhibitions at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in both 1985 and 1986.

In 1989, the Washington State Centennial Committee invited Z.Z. Wei to the United States for their Pacific Rim Culture Connection Program. He continues to live in Seattle and work as an artist. He received the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF)/NEA Regional Fellowship for Visual Artists; has served as artist in residence at Whitman College, Cornish College of the Arts, and the Bloedel Reserve[3]; and is one of the inaugurating inductees of the Asian Hall of Fame. Wei has participated in over 100 exhibitions. His works are collected by individuals and corporations in the United States and around the world.
