Geography

Sonawari is situated in the northern part of the Kashmir Valley, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies at an average elevation of 1,580 meters (5,180 feet) above sea level. The region is characterized by its lush green fields, orchards, and flowing rivers. The Jhelum River, which originates from the Verinag spring in the south of the valley, flows through Sonawari, providing water resources for agriculture and other purposes.The sub-district is bordered by the Wular Lake to the west, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, which significantly influences the local climate and ecosystem. Sonawari's terrain is predominantly flat, with some undulating areas near the lake and riverbanks.
