The ENNIE Awards is an award ceremony devoted to role-playing game (RPG) products and publishers hosted at Gen Con in Indianapolis. The awards were created by Russ Morrissey and Eric Noah and were run and owned by Morrissey until 2018.[1]

EN World came up with the idea of the award ceremony in 2001 and hosted the ceremony at Gen Con Indy since 2002. Since 2018, EN World is no longer associated with the awards.[2] The ENnies comprise two rounds. In the first round, publishers submit their products for nomination by the five democratically elected judges of the year. In 2017, the judges had a two-year term limit but were permitted to return after a year off. In the second round, the public votes on the nominated products, with the results being presented live at Gen Con.

History[edit]

The award ceremony was initially focused on the d20 System products and publishers, and was solely a virtual event. Since it has been broadened to include all forms of role playing. Since 2002, the awards have been announced at a live ceremony at Gen Con.

In 2007, the ENnie's were sponsored by a corporation, Your Games Now. In 2008, they were sponsored by Avatar Art. In 2010, 2011, and 2012, they were sponsored by both Indie Press Revolution and DriveThruRPG. From 2013–2016, they were sponsored by DriveThruRPG alone. In 2015, Campaign Coins made the medals as a sponsorship. In 2017, Lone Wolf Development became a sponsor.

In 2015, the awards had to disqualify the unofficially licensed Mass Effect RPG for copyright violations.[3]

In 2020, Massif Press withdrew its RPG Lancer from the competition over a 2017 controversy.[4][5]
