Rear Admiral Edward Joseph Barrett was a flag officer in the United States Coast Guard Serving as Chief of Systems of the United States Coast Guard serving from 1996-1999.[1] He is the grandfather of former Booz Allen Hamilton contractor Edward J. Snowden.
Early life
Barrett was born in the city of Poughkeepsie in the state of New York, United States. He graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1966.
Military career
Barrett received a Bachelor of Science From the US Coast Guard Academy, and a Master of Industrial Administration in 1975 from Purdue University. Adm. Barrett completed Naval Flight training at NAS Pensacola Florida in 1968.[1] Note that Thad Allen, Executive Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton, a major USCG contractor, and the former employer of Admiral Barrett's grandson is also a former USCG Flag Officer, and graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, as well as a former football star.[2] In 1995, Edward J. Barrett was inducted into the United States Coast Guard Academy hall of fame.[3]
Systems & Logistics
Admiral Barrett has worked primarily in Systems and Logistics Acquisition Directorate of the USCG, dealing primarily with technology and other equipment acquisition. Including associated support staffing contracts for hiring of technology personnel. Similar to the duties performed for the NSA by his grandson, Edward Snowden.
Admiral Barrett has testified before congress several times in regards to Narcotics, Explosives, and Ship scanning technology.[4]
Family
Barrett is the father of Wendy Elizabeth Snowden, Jennifer Barrett, and Julie Barret. He is the former father in law of Chief Warrant Officer (Aviation Maintenance 4) Lonnie Snowden (Ret) USCG.
