The Newspaper of Athens (Efimeris ton Athinon, Eφημερίς των Αθηνών) was the first newspaper that was published in Athens. The "Edopoiisis" for the publication of the newspaper on July 18th 1824 and the first issue of the Newspaper of Athens was released on August 20th 1824. It was printed in Salamis where the scrutineers of Athens temporarily sent the press by fear of Ottoman invasion in Evripos. The next sheet will be printed normally in Athens on September 6th 1824, where the print shop has now installed. Since then, 103 sheets were released the first year, until October 30th 1825 and 37 sheets will be issued only the second to last sheet on April 15th 1826, when the edition is abruptly stopped.[1]

The Newspaper of Athens used the current language (Demotic Greek) and systematically displayed martial news, like all the newspapers of the Greek Struggle. Along with these current affairs, there are also articles on the political system, the institutions and laws, the Press and the media, the office of "gazetteer" and politics. But what distinguishes this newspaper is the presentation of texts on poetry and literature. Also news about the Filomousos Society of Athens are published, the establishment of the Philanthropic Society in Nafplion, scholars letters on various topics and general news from abroad are not skipped. It should be noted that the language of the form, which is the "natural voice of the nation", is the Demotic Greek.[2]

Georgios Psyllas was the director of the newspaper. The newspaper was printed on a press that the envoy of the Philhellenic Society of London, Colonel Leicester Stanhope, donated to the Community of Athens.[1]
