Elizabeth Michael (Lulu) is a Tanzanian film actress.[1][2] In 2013, she won the Zanzibar International Film Festival award for Best Actress In Swahili Film.[3]

Early life and Education

She was born and raised in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Her father is Michael Kimemeta, and her mother is Lucrecia Kalugira. She attended Remnant Academy for her primary education. She went to Perfect Vision High School, St Mary's High School, and later to Midway Secondary School for her secondary education. She then joined Tanzania Public Service College to pursue Diploma in Human Resource Management.[4][5]

Career

Acting career

Lulu started her acting career at age five as a child actor. Actor Mahsein Awadh took her to Kaole Sanaa Group, where she acted in many television soap operas, including Zizimo, Baragumu, Gharika, Taswira, and Demokrasia that were very famous TV drama during 2000s[6] In 2005, she made her film debut in Jimmy Mponda's action film called Misukosuko Part 2. Her talent attracted many producers to cast her in their movie. In 2006, she appeared as the main character in the film called Wema and later she appeared in many movies like Family Tears, Dangerous Girl, Silent Killer among others that made her more popular.

  • Also, she was the among the people who participated in the award winning documentary called Wahapahapa Radio Drama[7] that was produced by Media for Development International Tanzania in association with Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs with support from the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the United States Agency for International Development through the US President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief. She played as Mainda in the story that tells the importance of parent-child communication in protecting youth as they navigate through the difficult period of adolescence. Through this project she appeared in Lady Jaydee's video called Shamba and Enika's video called Changanya, both videos were talking about parent-child communications. The project was directed by Jordan Riber from MFDI.
  • In August 2013, she launched her movie called Foolish Age, which was her first movie to put efforts as a producer. The event took place at Mlimani City Conference Hall in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania.[8] It was a very successful launch because so many people attended that night.[9] The movie was later selected at 2014 Zanzibar International Film Festival to be screened at the festival.[10] Foolish Age was nominated as Favorite Movie at 2014 Tanzania People's Choice Awards (Tuzo Za Watu) and she won Favorite Actress through her performance in Foolish Age[11]

In 2013, she was selected to be the official ambassador for Dar Es Salaam Film Festival DFF.[12] The event took place In Dar Es Salaam Tanzania from September 24–26, 2013. Her film Foolish Age, was also screened at that festival

  • In August 2013 she released her first movie which she produced herself. The movie was called Foolish Age and was premiered at Mlimani City Conference Hall, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The movie was screened at 2014 Zanzibar International Film Festival and also at 2013 Dar Film Festival.
  • In 2015, she released her second movie as a producer called Mapenzi Ya Mungu (God's love), the movie was screened at 2015 Zanzibar International Film Festival and the movie won 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards as the Best Movie of Eastern Africa.
  • In July 2016 she launched another movie called Ni Noma, the movie was first available in PROINBOX mobile application, and she later stated that the movie will be shown in cinemas all over the country in Tanzania[13]

Television hosting

At a young age, Michael became a TV host of ITV Tanzania. She hosted a program called Watoto Wetu (our children in English).

Also, in 2014 and 2015, she served as host at Tanzania Movie Talent (TMT), a Tanzanian acting competition.

Brand associations and Endorsements

In February 2014, she signed with Airtel Tanzania to be the host of the TV show called Airtel Yatosha Tv Show together with the Tanzanian TV presenter Dullah.[14]

In 2015, Lulu signed a brand ambassadorship deal with Paisha Tanzania[15] to be the brand ambassador of the application called paisha that deals with online business.[16]

In 2016, she was named by Hengan Baby Products and Sanitary Co. Ltd. (Tanzania) to be the ambassador of Freestyle Napkins (freestyle pads).[17]
