The '''''Enseigne Roux'' class''' was the thirteenth class of [[destroyer]]s to be built for the [[French Navy]] during [[World War I]]. The first two units of this class, the ''Enseigne Roux'' and the ''Mécanicien Principal Lestin'' saw use during the war. However, the construction of the third ship of the class &mdash; [[French destroyer Enseigne Gabolde|''Enseigne Gabolde'']] &mdash; was suspended in 1914. It was then resumed in 1921, and completed in 1923 to a modified design.

==Design and construction==
The ''Ensigne Roux''-class was an enlarged derivative of the previous {{sclass|Bisson|destroyer|0}}, themselves an improved {{sclass|Bouclier|destroyer|5}}. Two ({{ship|French destroyer|Enseigne Roux||2}} and {{ship|French destroyer|Mécanicien Principal Lestin||2}}) were ordered from [[Arsenal de Rochefort|Rochefort Dockyard]] to a standard design, while a third {{ship|French destroyer|Enseigne Gabolde||2}} was ordered from the [[Le Havre]] shipyard of Normand to a modified design, with different machinery.<ref name="Couhat p115-6">{{Harvard citation no brackets|Couhat|1974|pp=115–116}}</ref>

''Enseigne Roux'' and ''Mécanicien Principal Lestin'' were {{convert|82.6|m|ft}} long, with a [[Beam (nautical)|beam]] of {{convert|8.60|m|ftin}}. They [[Displacement (ship)|displaced]] {{convert|1075|t|LT}}. Four boilers fed two sets of direct-drive [[C. A. Parsons and Company|Parsons]] [[steam turbines]] rated at {{convert|17000|shp|kW}} which drove two propeller shafts, giving a design speed of {{convert|30|kn}}.<ref name="Couhat p115">{{Harvard citation no brackets|Couhat|1974|p=115}}</ref>{{#tag:ref|''Mécanicien Principal Lestin'' reached a speed of {{convert|31.21|kn}} during [[sea trials]].<ref name="Couhat p115"/>|group=lower-alpha}} ''Enseigne Gabolde'' was longer, and was fitted with geared steam turbines instead of direct-drive units. The design armament was as for the previous two classes, i.e. two [[Canon de 100 mm Modèle 1891|{{convert|100|mm|in|abbr=on|1}}]] Mle 1893 guns, four [[Canon de 65 mm Modèle 1891|{{convert |65|mm|in|abbr=on}}]] Mle 1902 guns and two twin 450&nbsp;mm torpedo tubes.<ref>{{Harvard citation no brackets|Couhat|1974|pp=101, 115}}</ref> During the First World War, a {{convert|75|mm|in}} [[anti-aircraft gun]] was added, with an anti-submarine armament of ten [[depth charge]]s and a towed [[Paravane (weapon)|explosive sweep]].<ref name="Couhat p115"/>

''Enseigne Roux'' and ''Mécanicien Principal Lestin'' were [[Keel laying|laid down]] in late 1913, [[Ceremonial ship launching|launched]] in 1915 and 
completed in 1916. Construction of ''Enseigne Gabolde'' was suspended due to the war, with her boilers used in other ships, with work not restarting until after the end of the war, and she was not completed until 1923.<ref name="Couhat p115-6"/>
