F-Zero 99[a] is an online racing video game developed by Nintendo Software Technology and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on September 14, 2023, and released for free through the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscription service on the same day for the users who are subscribed.[1]

It is the first new F-Zero game in the franchise since the release of F-Zero Climax (2004).

Gameplay

In a similar vein to Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Pac-Man 99, the game reuses assets and gameplay of F-Zero and re-contextualizes it as a battle royale. Players choose the same vehicles and tracks from the 1990 game. The speed boost system is reminiscent of what debuted in F-Zero X.[2] Every machine has an energy meter, which serves two purposes. First, it is a measurement of the machine's health and is decreased from accidents or attacks from opposing racers. Second, the player is given the ability to boost, but must sacrifice energy to do so. Its main mode is a single online race with up to 99 players. A rotating playlist of modes includes Grand Prix, Team Battle, and Pro Tracks.[3][4]

Development

The game was developed by Nintendo Software Technology.[5]
